A diamond trader of Surat died, while three others sustained serious injuries in the bomb blast that took place at Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai, on Wednesday evening. Part of a group of traders that went to Mumbai for business, they were caught up in the bomb blasts.

The diamond sector in Surat observed a bandh on Thursday to protest against the explosions which also killed several of their fellow diamantaires.

Bhupat Navadia 35, a resident of Umrala village in Bhavnagar district, went to Zaveri Bazaar along with his friends Vallabh Nari, Haresh Gadh and an unidentified diamond broker. The four were standing near the Pancharatna building, where the IED which was placed inside an umbrella, exploded. Bhupat sustained serious injuries.

Vallabh's right leg was severely damaged, while Haresh sustained injuries on head and the fourth trader injured his hand.
They were rushed to Safi Hospital by local businessmen. Bhupat died during treatment. Vallabh's leg had to be amputated, while Haresh needed ten stitches on his head. The condition of the fourth trader is said to stable. While the trio is being treated at the hospital in Mumbai, Bhupat's body was sent to his native village on Thursday afternoon.

Sources said that Bhupat had come to Surat 10 years ago. After polishing diamonds for some time, he got into the diamond broking business with the help of friends. Having made contact with traders in Mumbai, Bhupat started visiting Zaveri Bazaar thrice every month. As his business expanded, he moved to Mumbai permanently.

The diamond sector of Surat observed a complete bandh on Thursday to protest against the attacks at Zaveri Bazaar. Hira Bazaar in Mahidharpura, Mini Bazaar in Varachha and Choksi Bazaar of the city remained closed for the day. Office-bearers of Surat Diamond Association (SDA) observed silence for two minutes to pay homage to the departed.

In the afternoon, members of SDA held a meeting and later submitted a memorandum to the Surat police commissioner. The commissioner termed it impossible to provide security to every diamond firm and asked diamantaires to take precautionary measures .

"Commissioner Rakesh Asthana told us that diamond traders have to be more alert to avoid possible terror attacks. Asthana asked us to install CCTV cameras, prevent two-wheeler parking in crowded areas and shift food-stalls from important locations," Dinesh Navadia, president of SDA, said.
