The Surat police has asked authorities of theatres, hotels, guest-houses, jewellery shops, malls and departmental stores to get equipped with CCTV cameras. The notification to this effect was issued on Thursday to tighten vigilance in the times of increased terror threat.

To avoid mischief and anti-social activity, police have also heightened security at religious and business areas. Trained security personnel with metal detectors have also been deployed, said sources.

In the notification the police commissioner has asked people to strictly follow the orders and complete all procedures within one week starting from October 6.

"We have to keep track of security measures being taken at these places. Things can't be taken lightly. Excluding high-end places, majority of places in the city lack proper security cover. This notification has been issued to ensure proper security," said Rakesh Asthana, police commissioner of Surat.

Some within the police department feel the idea will not be effective. "Most malls, theatres, hotels and departmental stores in the city have personal security and other gadgets. Vigilance is needed in densely populated areas like Chauta Bazaar, Bhagal and similar areas. Here the smallest bit of mischief can lead to big incidents," a senior police official said, requesting anonymity.
