Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to adopt rain water harvesting method in its premises in all seven zones of the city, with an aim to raise the underground water level in the city. Through the plan, civic body hopes to increase water level considerably and also create awareness among the citizens.

After adopting techniques such as; usage of renewable and environment-friendly fuels on its various projects, civic body now has decided to adopt rain water harvesting. Rather than asking people for this, civic officials have decided to implement the project in their premises in all the seven zones of the city.

Apart from main SMC office in Muglisarai, the system will be developed in civic water & sewage treatment plants, zonal offices, gardens, civic open land, hospitals, residential complexes and schools operated by MSB (Municipal School Board). Permanent bore-wells will be created in all these places having pipe connectivity from the roof. Water collected in the roof will get dispersed in the bore-well.

Civic hydraulic department has even identified an agency and areas, where bore-wells will be created in the first phase. A proposal has been forwarded to civic rulers for final nod after which, officials will start working on the project. However, civic body has not decided the number of bore-wells to be created in this season nor have they fixed any budget for it.

JK Shah, head of civic hydraulic department said that in recent years, underground water level in Surat has gone down drastically and city’s only hope is weir-cum-causeway. Due to lack of awareness water recharging activity is nil in Surat, while civic body is facing immense pressure during daily water supplies. Recently, SMC had to stop water supply in Pandesara GIDC due to shortage of water quantum in the dam.

“This is just an initiative to recharge underground water. SMC has infrastructure and space required for the work and so, has decided to go with it. The drive will continue every year from this year, with an aim to dig as many bore-wells as possible,” Shah added.
