Taking a strong view against an incident of ragging, the management of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) today suspended six students for one year while 28 more students were meted out punishment based on their involvement in the incident, officials said.

The decision was taken after its anti-ragging committee recommended that action be taken against some second and third year students.

Early this week, around 15 students of the First Year Class had complained to the authorities about ragging by senior students, following which the matter was probed by the anti-ragging committee.

"Action has been taken against 34 students. Six have been suspended for one year from college. Others have been given punishment based on their involvement in ragging," member of the anti-ragging committee PL Patel told PTI.

"For others, punishment would include withdrawal of scholarships, no accesses to facilities at the institute and some of them would also not be allowed to sit in campus placement interviews," Patel said.

He further said that some students who had supported the ragging of juniors have been asked to move out of hostel for one month.
