Students of a government high school in Thengaithittu near here closed the school main gate demanding a new building in place of the present 'dilapidated' structure.
The students along with their parents came out of the classes yesterday and closed the main gate demanding that the government initite immediate steps to provide basic amenities and a sound building. The school building was constructed more than 35 years ago and had become unsafe for the accommodation of the classes, a spokesman of the parents association said.
Police rushed to the spot and tried in vain to pacify the agitators.
However, the agitation was called off after a team of officials of the Directorate ofSchool Education met the students and parents and promised that necessary steps would be taken to meet their demand.
