At a time when the diamond industry is recovering from recession, a diamond unit closed it’s operations, on Monday, following a strike by the company workers. The strike began on Saturday evening after the company reduced the wages from 15 paisa to 50 paisa per diamond.

Around 125 workers of Gopinath Diamonds at Mohanbhai ni chawl in Varachha are on a strike opposing the company's decision.

Sources said that, on Monday, a meeting was held between the workers and the company's owner Manu Patanwala where Patanwala agreed to increase the wages by 10 paisa, which the workers refused. "Angered by this, he asked the workers to look for another job, as he will not be able to afford their salaries. He even declared the closure of the unit," added the source.

Expressing grief over the incident, Rohit Mehta, the chairman of Surat Diamond Association (SDA) said, "Workers will easily find a job somewhere, but this decision will tarnish Patanwala's image and reputation."
