The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finally begun the work of organising street vendors.

After dragging its feet over the implementation of the national street vendor policy, the AMC is now setting in motion the work of counting the number of street vendors in the city.

To get an idea about how to plan the hawkers' zone in various areas, the AMC has invited expression of interest to carry out a survey of total number of hawkers in the city. Results of the survey will help in defining a better planning strategy and provide details to the civic body for the same.

For example, after the survey the civic body will have an idea about the number of hawkers, the type of business they have, their space requirement and so on if they are to be moved to the hawkers' zone.

"As per the results of the survey, we will be able to provide better facilities for hawkers at the zone. Once the survey is done, we will have various details about the vendors, their activity and their requirements," said an official.

The Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) that has prepared the draft for the city-level street vendor policy has estimated that Ahmedabad has around 80,000 vendors.

The survey carried by CEPT was based on a sample of 10 wards. The survey also found that majority of vendors in the city are in the food business followed by clothes and goods. Areas like Manekchowk, Kankaria and Kalupur Railway station had more cooked food laaris.
