With six more deaths today, the toll in the storm that tore through five districts of Bihar rose to 83 while relief operations continued on a war-footing.

Divisional commissioner Sudhir Kumar said six fresh deaths had been reported from Purnia district where the tornado-like phenomenon wrought widespread destruction, grounding over 5,000 dwellings and uprooting hundreds of trees.

Purnia has accounted for the highest number of casualties at 39 followed by Araria 33, Katihar seven, Kishanganj and Supaul two each.

Around 15,000 'kutcha', thatched and 'pucca' houses collapsed in the Tuesday night's storm which, packing a wind speed of 125 kmph, rendered over 25,000 people homeless in the state and North Dinajpur district in neighbouring West Bengal where 39 people died.

Kumar said operations to reach relief to the affected continued on a war-footing.

The authorities are visiting the affected villages and distributing cheques of Rs1.50 lakh each as ex-gratia to the bereaved families of the deceased, he said.

A quintal of foodgrain and Rs2000 in cash were also being given to the affected, he said.

Kumar said that district magistrate of Araria N Sravanan, who was on vacation, had been asked to resume charge for smoother relief operations.
