A new moral police brigade of Kashmir’s clerics is casting dark shadows over the new year celebrations here.
A body of over 500 clerics has issued a diktat in Kashmir asking people to desist from joining the new year celebrations.
Majils-e-Tahfuz-I-Imaan, a wing of Muthada Majlis Ulema, an apex body of Kashmiri Muslim clerics, has termed new year celebrations as un-Islamic and said therefore Muslims should stay away from such revelry.
Majils held its meeting here under its president Moulana Rahmat-ullah Mir in which it was felt that the new year celebrations are against the spirit of Islam.
“Muslim new year starts from Muharram not with January. Muslims should desist from all un-Islamic acts. Therefore people should stay away from the functions to mark the new year in Kashmir”, said a spokesman of Majlis.
The clerics are also approaching hotel owners trying to persuade them to discourage Muslims from joining new year parties. The silver lining, however, is that no blanket ban has been imposed on parties in the Valley.
