One of the country's largest multispeciality and cancer care hospitals and five-storeyed medical college with 750 seats are being set up by Gujarat Cancer Society in the state.

The first phase of the ambitious project was recently unveiled and is open for public use. The 10-storeyed, 700-bed hospital is the first-of-its-kind in the country and is designed by American architect Burt Hill's Ahmedabad office.

In order to set up the world-class medical college and hospital having latest medical infrastructure, NGO Gujarat Cancer Society laid the foundation of the giant 17 lakh sq ft construction in one lakh sq yards in Asarwa that was known as New Swadeshi Mill Compound last year.

Prashant Kinariwala, general secretary of GCS said, "The project was roughly estimated to cost around Rs400 crore, of which Rs300 crore is the land price donated by the state government for the cause. We have collected Rs110 crore for construction and instruments.

" From the total sum of Rs110 crore, Pankaj Patel of the Zydus Cadila group has promised to donate Rs60 crore.  In the first phase, a 300-bed hospital would be functional. In the second phase, the hospital would have 700-bed capacity. And with it, Medical Council of India approved medical college having 150 seats for medical degree course would become functional from July.

"GCS has already applied for licence to MCI, which we expect to get before the next academic year beginning from June-July," said Kinariwala.

Dr Kirti Patel, dean of GCS medical college, said, "GCS's medical college which would begin with 150 seats  in 2011-2012 would keep adding 150 seats for next four years to total 750 medical seats. After this, GCS plans to launch 75 seats for the postgraduate medical courses."

Commenting on the project, Dr Patel said that it is a vital boost for the state as a medical destination.

"A dynamic growth in medical infrastructure would soon come about with more such projects being set up in the state," he added.

On an average, the hospital treats 800 patients with 100 new patients being added each day to the OPD.

The governing council of the hospital comprises health minister Jaynarayan Vyas; Pankaj Patel, CMD, Zydus Cadila; business persons Navneet Choksi and Kshitij Madan Mohan; Bharti Parikh,
