The District Education Officers' (DEO) office is reportedly facing a severe staff crunch, adding to the workload and woes of those presently working there. Around 70% of the posts in the office remain vacant, forcing employees currently working there to put in much more than their own share of work.
Retirement and transfers of staff and better opportunities elsewhere are proving to be the main reason for the dearth of manpower.
Besides, the problem is being compounded by the fact that youngsters and freshers are increasingly unwilling to work in government offices. "It's been about 6-8 months that we're facing a major staff crunch," says an employee. Posts like those of supervising officers and accounts officers are vacant, and being handled by the existing staff. Besides academic staff, clerical staff is also in short supply. Several employees are handling two or more posts together.
"Generally, appointing staff is under the purview of the Gujarat Public Service commission (GPSC). But they haven't recruited fresh people yet, adding to our troubles," said an employee.
Another employee added, "We have spoken to the DEO regarding this inconvenience. The government, after recommendation by the DEO, will appoint new staff. We are waiting to hand over the present workload of 2-3 departments to these new recruits."
Only three employees are working as Class II staff, against which the total staff should be 11.
Similarly for Class III (academics), only 17 employees are working, in spite of the total number of posts being 26. For Class III (Administration), there are 8 empty seats waiting to be filled.
Speaking on this issue, DEO Ramesh Patel said, "Talks are on with the government. But we aren't facing a problem presently. The new staff will be appointed soon.
