Gopal Das, an Indian prisoner languishing in a Pakistan jail for 27 years, has made shocking allegations that Indian foreign office staff had provided a tip-off to the Pakistani authorities which enabled them to catch Das.

Das, who claimed that he was sent as a spy to Pakistan, was recently released on the appeal of the Supreme Court of India. It was also a goodwill gesture shown by Yusuf Gilani that Das was released. The prime minister of Pakistan had come to Mohali to witness the semi finals of the World Cup between India and Pakistan.

Gopal Das was on a visit to the city to meet prominent human rights lawyers, MK Paul and KM Paul.

Talking with media persons, Das said, "The Indian officers had provided the inputs because of which I was picked up by the Pakistani authorities. The Indian officers did it for money. Indian politicians and ministers made several appeals to the Pakistani government for my release, but all in vain. The authorities agreed to release me only when the SC stepped in."

Das's brother had filed a petition before the Supreme Court where he pleaded for Das's release on humanitarian grounds. Das was arrested while he was crossing the border in July 1984 and was later sentenced to a 25-year-long life imprisonment on June 27, 1986 under section 59 of the Pakistan Military Act.

Gopal Das served his sentence in different jails of Pakistan. After the Pakistani authorities released Das, he filed a petition before the Supreme Court asking for compensation.

Explaining how he became a spy of the Indian government, Das said, "I was approached by a local and was later used as a spy for the Indian foreign intelligence agency, RAW. At the age of 25 I was caught by the Pakistani authorities. Now I am looking forward to start my life afresh as 27 precious years of my life have gone by."

Das also claimed that the Pakistan government tries to lure Indian fishermen who are caught breaching international border in high sea.

He said, "They make lucrative offers to the fishermen who are caught by the Pakistan marines officials to spy on the Indian government from the western coast of the country."
