Residents in the national capital using unauthorised water connections will now face music as the city government has set up three special courts to try people for such offences.

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials said the special courts have been set up to try people for offences under the Delhi Water Board Act-1998 which has provision for penalising those having unauthorised water connections.

"The three special courts have already started functioning," a DJB official said.

As per the procedure, challans are issued by the DJB officials against the violators and copy of the challans are filed in the designated courts of special Metropolitan Magistrates.

The first set of 14 challans was called for hearing in the court of special metropolitan magistrate at Kanhaiya Nagar last week.

The DJB official said out of 14 cases, the court has imposed a fine of Rs 2000 each in nine cases.

In other cases, summons were issued to the violators by the court.

The DJB has appealed to those using unauthorised water and sewer connections to come forward and voluntarily apply for regular connections in their nearest DJB office.

"This will save them from prosecution in the courts," the official said.
