A 27-year-old physical education teacher from Manav Mandir School, Malabar Hill, was arrested on Monday morning for allegedly sodomising a six-year-old boy.

Shivajirao Tawde allegedly sexually abused Rushabh Khan (name changed) on Wednesday and Thursday in the school toilet, and forced him to frame another student, 11-year-old Prakash Sharma (name changed).

Khan’s parents noticed that something was wrong with him, as he grew more and more silent. “He refused to eat anything, and his school performance became poor too. After his mother scolded him, he told her about the incident. He said a senior from school had abused him,” said Khan’s uncle.

On Friday, Khan’s parents submitted a written complaint to the school that Prakash Sharma studying in Std VI had sexually abused their son.

The school authorities then asked a Maths teacher to look into the matter. A close friend of Tawde’s, the Maths teacher allegedly made Sharma write a confessional letter saying he with a friend of his sexually abused Khan. The authorities couldn’t find any evidence against Sharma’s friend, but expelled Sharma based on the letter.

However, on Sunday, Khan admitted that Sharma was innocent, and it was actually his PE teacher who had abused him. Khan said the teacher had threatened to “throw him under the school bus” if he did not put the blame on another student. On Sunday night, Khan’s parents lodged an FIR against Tawde with the Malabar police. Tawde, who has been teaching at the school for more than a year, was arrested from his residence in Ghatkopar, while the Maths teacher’s role is still being investigated.

School administrator TRK Varma said, “We will reinstate the expelled student as soon as the parents give us a written letter.”

“We have registered a case under sections 377 (unnatural sex) and 506 ii (criminal intimidation) against Tawde. He was produced before the court which remanded him in police custody till October 7. We are investigating from all possible angles, and are also verifying whether any other school officials are involved,” said deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, Anil Kumbhare. The police have sent the boy for medical examination.

Varma and the principal, who did not wish to be named, expressed shock at the incident, especially because Tawde had got married recently.

“Tawde has a diploma in physical education and was a trusted employee,” the principal said.
