Allak Vaidh, 56, got a new lease of life because of his son, Chirag, who donated 70% of his liver to his father, a patient of acute liver failure. The liver transplant proved successful with both father and son recovering fully.

Allak, a resident of Navsari, was suffering from a liver problem which had gradually damaged his liver seriously. Doctors said he had no option but to go for a liver transplant surgery. However, despite much effort, no donor could be found for Allak which further reduced his chances of survival.

It was at this juncture that his elder son, 31-year-old Chirag, stepped in to save his father's life. He said he wanted to donate his liver for transplantation on his father.

"Chirag's blood group matched his father's and we decided to conduct the transplant surgery. Chirag donated 70% of his liver and this saved his father's life. After an eight-hour surgery, doctors declared the liver transplant a success," said Chirag Desai, chief liver transplant surgeon at Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad.Desai added that some elementary precautions would have to be taken by the duo in the future, after which both father and son will be able to lead a normal life. The surgery was carried out in Ahmedabad on September 13, 2011.

A few days after the procedure, doctors found that the livers of both father and son had grown. This was a good sign. While Allak has no words for his son's sacrifice, Chirag sees it as his duty towards his father.

"I did what any son would do for his father. My father gave me life and it is my moral responsibility to look after him. I am happy that my father has recovered and is alive and doing well," Chirag said.
