The 1 MW solar power project as part of which solar panels have been installed atop the Narmada branch canals has started generating power. The plant is slated to be formally launched by the chief minister on Tuesday.

According to officials, solar panels have been set up over 750-metre-long stretch of the Narmada branch canal near Chandrasan village of Kadi taluka, around 30 km from Ahmedabad.

Since its inception around a couple of months back, the solar power plant has generated close to 2 lakh units of electricity. It is expected to generate around 1.60 million units, i.e. 16 lakh units, of electricity in a year.

“The best thing about this project is that it eliminates the need to acquire land for putting up panels. It will also prevent evaporation of 90 lakh litres of water from the canal every year,” Gurdeep Singh, managing director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL), said.

DNA was the first to write in February that work on the project had already commenced and the plant would begin generating electricity soon.

Officials said that the EPC contract for the project was awarded to Sun Edison at a cost of Rs17.71 crore. Work on the project started in September and it was completed in January.

“The cost of this project was higher than a traditional plant because it was the first project of its kind and we had to take additional safety measures. But, we expect cost of similar project to come down to around Rs12 crore or so in the near future,” Singh said.

Singh further said that the project had immense potential for replication. According to estimates, there is potential to install solar power generation capacity of 2,200 MW on Narmada canal branches, he added.
