The Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011, which ended at a dazzling function on Friday, turned out to be bigger, better and grander than the 2009 summit.

Barring the total number of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU), which dipped, the latest edition was bigger in almost all aspects as compared to the previous edition. This is even as, paradoxically, it was a much more sober event as compared to the previous one.

The amount of MoUs increased by 68.4% over that signed in the 2009 summit -from Rs Rs12.37 lakh crore to Rs20.83 lakh crore. The MoUs signed at the 2011 Summit have the potential to create as many as 52 lakh jobs, while the corresponding number was 29.70 lakh in 2009.

"The 2009 Vibrant Gujarat Summit was a high-pitched event, while the 2011 edition was more of a subtle show. In 2009, Vibrant Gujarat Summit had not created a niche for itself, which now it seems to have managed," say watchers who have closely seen Vibrant Gujarat events.

The 2011 Vibrant Gujarat Summit was also much ahead of the 2009 Summit as far as number of total participants and visitors is concerned. In 2009, the number was 20,000, which grew to 35,000 this time.

According to the state government, citizens from as many as 101 countries were in attendance at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, while the number was 47 in the previous edition, held at Gujarat Science City.

The number of foreign participants in the event also increased from 600 in 2009, to 1,400 in 2011, while countries like Canada, Australia, Rwanda and Mozambique held separate seminars in a bid to woo potential investors.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 was also the first time that other states participated in the event. Representatives from as many as 16 states were present at the Summit. In fact, the states also got a chance to pitch for investors.

Maheshwar Sahu, principal secretary, industries department said that Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2011 had emerged as a global event, in line with the CM's vision.
