There was trouble on the Indo-Pak border in Punjab as six rockets fired in quick succession from the Pakistan side fell on the Indian territory on Friday night.

As two of the six rockets fell inside the border outpost of the BSF, close to Attari in Amritsar district, the BSF was put on high alert along the border. Fortunately, the rockets did not explode, causing no damage to the BSF outpost, said a senior BSF officer.

This is the third rocket attack within six months from Pakistan targeting Indian villages. Similar rockets were fired from across the border last July and September spreading panic among villagers. Back then people in about a dozen villages had to vacate their places due to fear and panic after the intermittent rocket attacks.

Trying to study a pattern in the rocket attacks, a senior BSF official confirmed that “this happens whenever the BSF shoots down a Pakistani smuggler on the border”.

“A Pakistani smuggler was shot along the border in Amritsar on Thursday and on Friday we have rocket attacks,” he added. A similar pattern was also noted last September, he said.
In retaliation the BSF on Friday night, fired quick rounds of
machine gun shots targetting the

Pakistan side from where the rockets were supposedly fired. The BSF officials were not sure if the Pakistan Rangers were involved.
BSF IG Himmat Singh said the BSF resented the incident and conveyed its feelings to senior officers in Pakistan.

He said rest of the four rockets fired from the Pakistani side could not be located as the entire belt along the border was engulfed in fog. He said the BSF patrolling had been intensified and more troops had been lined up along the border.

Incidentally, there has been no damage to life or property.
The BSF officers feel that Pakistani terrorist groups might have engineered the attacks with or without connivance of the Pakistan Rangers on the border.
