Crime branch and the Sanand police have arrested six people who fleeced the owners of a saw mill. Three of them have been identified as Hardik Padhia, who posed as a journalist; Bharat Thakore, who posed as a VAT official; and Manoj Thakore, who posed as the district forest officer.

According to police sources, the three, along with Henald Christian, Jayesh Shrimali and Kanu Desai, had confronted the driver of a truck carrying wood of Bharat Saw Mill, located near Vishala circle, and threatened the driver of dire consequences, saying they were ‘influential’ people, on June 2, 2009.

The driver, however, asked the accused to talk to the owner of the saw mill. The accused then met the owners of the mill, Bharat and Shailesh Patel, and told him that they would let the truck go only if they were given Rs3 lakh. The owners of the mill, however, offered them Rs1 lakh, after which they left.

Recently, Padhia, under the impression that the mill owners would not recognise him, went to the saw mill to buy wood. The owners immediately informed Vejalpur police officials, who arrived at the spot and arrested Hardik.

After Hardik confessed to the offence, the Vejalpur police handed over the case to the crime branch. Narsinh Patel, the main owner of the mill, then registered a case against the accused. Sleuths of the crime branch nabbed the rest of the five accused with the help of Sanand police, which is now investigating the matter.
