Retired IPS officer MK Tandon, who was posted as joint commissioner of police, sector 2, Ahmedabad, during the 2002 riots, appeared before the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT) on Monday.

The probe team, after submitting its report on the investigation conducted by SIT member AK Malhotra, has begun another round of questioning of the accused named in the petition filed by Zakia Jafri in the Supreme Court. Zakia is the widow of Congress MP Ahesan Jafri who was killed in the Gulbarg society massacre during the riots.

Members of the SIT questioned Tandon for nearly eight hours in connection with Zakia Jafri's complaint. Sources told DNA that Tandon was questioned particularly about his whereabouts on the day of the Gulbarg society massacre. "The probe team wants to know about his presence at different places during the day and also about the patrolling undertaken by him," a source said.

This is the fourth time the SIT has questioned Tandon in connection with his role during the riots. Earlier, the team had reportedly asked him about the political pressure, if any, that was brought to bear on the police during the violence and about his whereabouts during the riots.

Sources said that the report on Malhotra's investigation submitted to the apex court had reportedly stated that the role of Tandon, former minister of state for home Gordhan Zadaphia and IPS officer PB Gondia should be reinvestigated. It was in response to Malhotra's report that the SIT had summoned all the three.
Gondia and Zadaphia, however, did not appear before the probe team.
