Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the three-day International Sindhi Sammelan that began on Friday at Karnavati Club.

Sindhi personalities from the field of politics, industry, banking, arts, and education were present on the occasion. They included Sindhis from USA, Europe, Middle East and other countries. The province of Sindh (in Pakistan) and Gujarat have been neighbours that share a 5000-year-old heritage of the Harappan Civilisation that began in the Indus Valley of Sindh and spread to sites in Gujarat like Dholavira in Kutch and Lothal in Ahmedabad.

Chief minister Narendra Modi Said, "I heartily respect all of you, and I am not saying this because I am expected to say this as a Chief Minister. When you look at the journey of development of human race, you come to a halt, you stop where a great civilization was born and I am proud to say that our great grand ancestors whose vision led to the development of the races, were Sindhis.

The new generation should also be exposed to such a civilization. Is it not our responsibility to save such rich and varied heritage? " He also suggested to organize a Sindhi food festival. He also urged Sindhis to speak their mother tounge and teach their language to the new generation

After the success of the first Sindhi Sammelan in 1992, the Alliance of Sindhi Associations of Americas Inc. organized 17 sammelans in USA, UK, Mumbai, Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, and Barbados. Amar Doulatani, national president, Sindhi Council of India and chairman of the 18th International Sindhi Sammelan, says, "Sindhis have lost their identity. The younger generation knows very little about their roots, their culture, language, religious rituals and cuisine of their ancestors. The Sammelan is an attempt to provide a platform for them to discuss their identity and take up issues for the development of Sindhi society."

Among the Sindhis from Gujarat present at the sammelan were Maya Kodnani (MLA), Narendra Somani (hotelier), Manohar Keswani (GS, Sindhu Sewa Samaj), Nandlal Khanchandani (real estate developer) and Harish Kakwani (media consultant, Ambedkar University) besides many Sindhi entrepreneurs of the city.
