Sikh man stabbed at US airport, police rules out hate crime

A middle-aged Sikh travelling to India was stabbed by a White man at an airport in California, but police ruled out the incident as a hate crime.

The man, whose name has not been released by the police, was treated at the airport for a quarter-inch stab wound in the upper torso at Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

He chose to continue with his flight to India, a local newspaper reported on Monday.

According to reports, the Indian man was standing with his translator when the unprovoked attack occurred.

There was no communication between the victim and the assailant, who remains in the Fresno County Jail, the newspaper reported.

The assailant, a 26-year-old white man, Mitchell Dufur, has been taken into custody, said Fresno City Police Department's Lt Don Gross.

Dufur was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a knife in an airport.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has asked the FBI and police to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime.

Meanwhile, the police have ruled out the attack as a hate crime incident.
