Shimla: A senior IPS officer committed suicide here on Sunday by shooting himself. His son alleged that "harassment" by two top cops led him to take the step, a charge they denied.
Jagjeet Kumar, 57, of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, who was posted as inspector general of police (railway and traffic) here, shot himself in his right temple with his service revolver and died on the spot, Shimla superintendent of police RM Sharma said. Police came to know about the incident at 3.30am and went to the IGP's home near Mehli More in Kasumpti area and found him lying on the floor, the SP said. Kumar, a 1985-batch IPS officer, is survived by a son and a daughter.

Kumar's son Suraj said that his father was disturbed because he was being harassed by senior police officers. Inspector general of police (law and order) Pardeep Kumar rubbished the allegation saying that the IG was facing "serious domestic problems" because of his son, who had been arrested in a car theft case in Delhi. The allegation was supported by SR Mardi, additional director general of police, (vigilance and anti-corruption bureau). The IG (law and order) said the deceased officer's son Suraj (36) had been arrested in connection with a case of car theft. He was also going through a divorce with his wife, the daughter of a Shimla-based businessman, the IG said. He claimed that Suraj's in-laws had complained to the police against him for sending "objectionable" SMSes to his wife.

"This morning, when senior police officers visited the house of the deceased, his son was under the influence and misbehaved with us," Kumar said. Repeated attempts to contact Suraj were futile.
