Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today sought concerted efforts in harnessing renewable energy sources in Delhi to cut down pollution and make the city a cleaner place.

"Harnessing renewable energy is a must for Delhi as it will help in decreasing the pollution load and make the city a cleaner and better place," she said.

Dikshit was speaking after inaugurating Akshay Urja Diwas which is celebrated by the Delhi government to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

She said Delhi does not have potential to harness wind energy and only possible option before it is to harness solar energy and energy from the waste.

"As governments, businesses and individuals worldwide rise to the challenges of energy security and climate change, renewable energy has emerged as the most promising solution," she said.

Exhorting people to conserve energy and make its judicious use, she also emphasised on the concept of "recycle, reuse and reduce".

"It is must to concentrate on recycle, reuse and reduce until we overcome all dangers arising due to climate change," she said, seeking greater public awareness to make Delhi a cleaner city.

Noting that the government has already set up a plant at Okhla to generate power from solid waste, she said efforts should be made to set up more such units.

"Delhi will also strive hard to set up more plants in future to overcome problem of overflowing landfill sites," Dikshit said, asking citizens not to use plastic bags.

"Delhi has the largest CNG fleet of public transport system in the world.  Apart from this, Delhi Metro has also contributed in containing pollution level," she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdulla said the country is blessed with variety of renewable energy sources and they should be used to generate energy.

"It is time to go for renewable energy sources," he said.

He also appreciated role of Dikshit in making Delhi more clean and pollution free.
