An isolated Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi came under further attack on Saturday from none other than Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit even as he welcomed the probe against allegations of corruption and vowed support to the investigations.

“We feel relieved and happy (at the successful games). But what is disturbing is the corruption charges… The fact that the prime minister has taken almost an instantaneous decision to order probe into the whole thing and have the picture ready by January… is very heartening,” she said to a news agency.

The Delhi chief minister said the Centre had given a number of loans (to the OC). “That is where the real corruption is. There may have also been (corruption) in some government departments. I am not ruling that out,” she added.

Kalmadi, who is the Congress MP from Pune and the head of the Indian Olympic Association, has welcomed the probe.

“The honourable prime minister has appointed a committee to probe into all matters relating to the Commonwealth Games. We welcome the initiative and hope that it will be comprehensive, covering all aspects. The Organising Committee will be happy to provide all support to the panel,” he said in a statement to the media.

Sources close to Kalmadi said he was hoping for public support after the successful hosting of the games. “He has not given up and is vowing to fight back. He had gone to the OC office today for a couple of hours. He seems to be exercising back channel diplomacy to save himself.”

Prior to the games, the Central Vigilance Commission and the Comptroller and Auditor General had raised the flag about the quality of work and allegations of corruption. The government had then promised an investigation after the games conclusion. After the games finished on October 14, the prime minister appointed the probe panel.

The source said Kalmadi or the OC was not involved in building the games infrastructure. “It will be very interesting to see how the probe goes ahead,” the source added.
