A security guard was killed by miscreants during an attempted robbery at an ATM centre of a nationalised bank in Chandrayangutta area here in the early hours of today, police said.

The guard, B Mallesh Goud (55), was strangulated to death by unidentified members of a burglary gang, may be after he foiled their attempt to loot the ATM centre adjoining SBI's Chandrayangutta branch at about 4 am, they said.

"It seems Mallesh resisted the miscreants' attempt to loot the ATM, who tried to cut and open the ATM machine using cutting tools," Kanchanbagh police said.

The assailants ran from the scene after a customer, who came to withdraw money raised an alarm after he noticed them trying to break the ATM machine, a police officer said based on preliminary investigation.

"The culprits belong to a burglary gang which targets ATMs. This time they were unable to break open the ATM after the hue and cry and fled the spot. We are checking the CCTV footage to find out how it all happened," the police officer said.
