Security beefed up at Ahmedabad airport

Airlines have also been asked to conduct secondary checks of all travellers before they board the aircraft.

Security was beefed up at the Ahmedabad airport on Friday following an alert by the home ministry about a possible terror strike.

This comes a day after an alert was sounded at Mumbai airport in the wake of intelligence reports about a possible plane hijack alert.

"The security at Ahmedabad airport has been intensified as a precautionary measure due to an alert by the home ministry about a possible terror strike," an official at Ahmedabad airport, said.

Officials said that security has been stepped up at the domestic and international terminals at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, from Friday morning.

"The passengers are being scanned more rigorously and thoroughly by the security personnel. We have also increased security checks, and vigilance on key areas has been increased," said officials.

They further said that the airlines have also been asked to conduct secondary checks of all travellers before they board the aircraft.
On Thursday, an alert was sounded at Mumbai airport following a hijack alert. The alert from Intelligence Bureau said that there was a hijack threat to a flight from Mumbai. It said that Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives could possibly try to hijack a plane to press for release of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving 26/11 attacker, who was recently sentenced to the gallows by a court.

Meanwhile, three international flights to Mumbai, were diverted to Ahmedabad due to adverse weather conditions in the Maharashtra capital.

Officials said that British Airways London-Mumbai flight, Air Mauritius' Mauritius-Mumbai flight and Etihad Airways' Abu Dhabi-Mumbai flight, landed in Ahmedabad due to rains in Mumbai.
