The present director general of police (DGP), SS Khandwawala, will retire on August 31 this year, and senior officials of the home department have started to scrutinise names of senior IPS officers for the top post.
The home department has allegedly finalised a few names for the top post. Sources close to the development said that the highest possibility is of 1976 batch-IPS officer Sudhir Sinha taking over.
According to the sources, Sinha is in the good books of the government and hence stands a very good chance of being appointed to this prestigious rank in the state IPS.
It should be noted that Sinha has been the commissioner of police of three cities i.e. Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat, and is currently posted as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), law and order. Sinha joined the IPS on November 14, 1976.
RMS Brar, currently the director general of police (DGP) and posted as the DG of Home Guards, may not be given the charge or may not be transferred as the DG of the state. Brar, however, will retire in October 2010. He was posted as Surat CP.
Apart from these two officers, names of two other officers like Deepak Swaroop and Chitranjan Singh too are being discussed. Swaroop joined duty on July 14, 1976 while Singh joined on July 11, 1976.
Kuldeep Sharma, another officer who joined IPS in the same year (July 11, 1976) is also eligible for the post, but could not be finalised due to his alleged discord with the state government.
