Schools asked to take precautionary steps

On Wednesday, some schools in the city ran medical check-ups on their students. On Tuesday, 10 schools in the city had announced a holiday till Monday.

A day after seven-year-old Aarya Burade died of deadly H1N1 virus in the city, the district education officer (DEO) on Wednesday passed urgent instructions to 489 schools in the district, asking them to take certain preventive measures in the wake of the swine flu scare. Over 2.85 lakh students study in these 489 schools.

"The school authorities, teachers, employees, students and their parents should take care of their health. Cleanliness in schools, proper use of insecticide, checking in hostels, regular interaction with parents are some of the measures advised for schools. Not only that the school authorities should sanction holiday for a week and inform government authorities accordingly. Those with flu symptoms should take leave for a week,'' DEO, RK Patel, told DNA.

Meanwhile, four more persons with suspected swine flu symptoms were admitted to SSG hospital on Wednesday. Of them is a 22-year-old nurse. The others are a 45-year-old woman, a 19-year-old youth (who is studying in Pune and has come to Vadodara), and a 13- year-old girl from the Pratapgunj area of Vadodara.

The 13-year-old girl is having fever, cough and cold. She was referred by a private doctor.

SSG in-charge RMO Dr Pravinaben Thakkar said, "As of now there have been 11 cases. Six of them are suspected, four of which were admitted today. Of the other five cases, two tested positive and are under treatment; of the two who tested negative, one has been discharged and one is still under treatment. And there was, of course, one death.''
