Unidentified persons set on fire a vacant school in interior Thoubal district of Manipur, in another instance of school buildings targetted by groups.

Police sources said the Ganga Academy High School building was set ablaze at Sugnu area, about 65 km south-east of here, at around 4 am yesterday and the flames gutted major portion of the building. There was no report of any injury or casualty.

Identity of the mischief makers was not known but the incident came close on the heels of similar attacks during past two weeks when three school buildings were set ablaze for carrying on classes in defiance of the 'diktat' by some groups.

The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) and Kangleipak Students' Association had started boycotting classes since September 9 last to support the demands of major social organisation Apunba Lup (AL).

The organisations had also warned the educational institutions not to conduct classes during the boycott call.

AL has been agitating for the past four months protesting the killing of a youth by police commandos on July 23 last here. The AL called demanding resignation of chief minister Ibobi Singh on moral grounds, dismissal of commandos  involved in the incident and stern action against senior police officials responsible for deployment of commandos.
