Surat: Even though the state government boasts of excellent results of its highly appreciated Chiranjeevi Yojana, the ground reality is something different in Surat and South Gujarat.
A survey done by Centre for Social Studies on VNSGU campus, the scheme has failed in fulfilling the basic aim of providing safe delivery to women in poorest areas.
To provide safe and timely medical treatment to pregnant women of economically backward classes, the state government launched Chiranjeevi Yojana in 2005 in five poor districts of the state. The yojana was extended to entire Gujarat from 2007.
A survey done by Centre for Social Studies (CSS) says that the scheme has not given the expected results in South Gujarat.
CSS has given various reasons for the failure, which includes non-availability of doctors, lack of timely treatment, slackness of the department to promote the scheme.
"There are more than 250 registered gynecologists in Surat district, but only 56 of them have been registered with the scheme. Majority of them are in periphery of Surat, Kamrej and Bardoli, while internal and tribal areas do not have access of such registered doctors," said Akash Acharya, faculty member of CSS, who had conducted the survey
The survey also stated that most of the doctors registered with the scheme in the rural areas, do not handle serious cases and refer them to government hospitals. This is more evident in cases, where operation is needed for delivery.
