The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the deportation of international filmmaker Craig Maxwell Sterry, the estranged husband of model Ujjwala Raut. A bench of justice BN Agarwal and justice GS Singhvi urged the Bombay high court to decide Sterry’s petition by September 14.

The British national had moved the apex court last week challenging the Centre’s August 10 decision to cancel his Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card.

Sterry faced imminent deportation after the Goa bench of the Bombay high court rejected his plea to stay the cancellation.

Locked in a matrimonial dispute, the film maker blames his wife for influencing the authorities to cancel the PIO card, which was issued to him in 2006.

The PIO scheme launched by the Union government in 1999 entitles any person to enjoy this status as an Indian on account of various relationships, including that he/she’s the spouse of a citizen of India.

One of the various benefits that a PIO cardholder can avail is that he/she doesn’t require a visa for visiting India. It expires in 180 days and must be renewed by the Foreigners’ Registration Office within a month’s time.
