Around 4.25 lakh cusec (cubic feet per second) of water was flowing into the already overflowing Sardar Sarovar dam (Narmada dam) on Wednesday, leading to a sharp rise in the dam’s water level. The increased inflow was due to the release of water from Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh since last night owing to heavy rains in the region.

“The inflow in Sardar Sarovar dam increased from 1.85 lakh cusec today morning to 4.25 lakh cusec in the evening due to increased discharge from Indira Sagar dam,” informed Nitin Patel, water resources minister.

As against the crest level of 121.92m, the dam was overflowing at 123.51m in the morning. The water level increased to 124.30m during afternoon and was expected to touch 125.50m by late night. In the current season, Sardar Sarovar dam started overflowing for the first time on August 7 and has continued to overflow since then. This has aided in filling around 130 small and big lakes through the Sujalam Sufalam scheme.

The minister said that though rains evaded the state so far, the water availability situation was better because of Narmada dam. However, he rued the fact that huge quantities of water, which would have been enough to meet the entire state’s water requirement for more than a year, had been released in the sea. “This would not have been the situation if the state government was permitted to raise the height of the dam,” he said.
