The human rights organisation, People's Union for Civil Liberties, has condemned the Gujarat government's 'vindictive' action in arresting whistleblower IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. PUCL's Vadodara unit has alleged that the action against Bhatt is nothing but the result of the state government's frustration and desperation.

The action is an attempt to intimidate all other important witnesses of the Gujarat riots cases, says a statement released by the organisation on Sunday.

"The action of the government of Gujarat is nothing but subversion of the constitution of India and rule of law," the communiqué says. Human rights activists such as Dr JS Bandhookwala, Renu Khanna, Rohit Prajapati, Ashok Gupta, Trupti Shah, Tapan Dasgupta, Chinu Srinivasam, Dhriru Mistry and Johannes Manjrekar are associated with PUCL.
