Shillong: Not attaching much importance to dissident activities in NCP in Assam and Meghalaya, party general secretary PA Sangma said it was better to work with a cohesive group of dedicated people than elements who 'extort'.
"It is better to work with a small group of dedicated people than a chunk who are extorting the party," the former Lok Sabha speaker said here last evening in an apparent bid to downplay reports of dissident activities in the North East.
Sangma, who was talking to reporters, commented "in fact, we feel it is a gain for us."
Sangma said the state unit's disciplinary action committee is examining the case of Adolf Hitler Marak, accused of anti-party activities, and the panel would recommend action within a couple of days.
Marak, the chief whip of the opposition in the state legislature, has been served show-cause notice following reports that he is hobnobbing with the Congress.
The party has already written to the Assembly speaker seeking appointment of a new opposition chief whip.
The NCP has also been plagued by dissident activities in neighbouring Assam with about thousand party leaders and workers, led by party's lone MLA in the state Dulal Chandra Ghosh, having joined the Congress on Monday last.
Ghosh was accompanied by 14 state committee members, including vice-president of the party's Assam unit Dakshinaranjan Nath and its state general secretaries Ramen Borthakur and Akshay Kumar Rajkhowa.
