Accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of giving a false statement on power situation in the state, the opposition Samajwadi Party today staged a walkout from the legislative council.

The issued was raised by the opposition—including BJP, SP and Congress—through different motions during zero hour demanding a debate on the power situation in the state.

BJP member Hriday Narain Dixit alleged that villagers were getting power supply for only one to two hours.

"The only policy of the government is of privatisation. It wants to shrug its responsibility by privatising the sector," he said.

The BJP alleged that poor power situation had affected agriculture sector worst as tubewells were non-functional due to electricity shortage and farmers were not getting water for irrigation.

Congress member Naseeb Pathan said there was acute power crisis in the state and demanded the government to ensure adequate power supply during the Ramzam month.

SP member Rakseh Singh Rana alleged due to lackadaisical approach of the state government the NTPC, which had proposed to set up a plant in UP, has shifted its 4,000mw power project to Madhya Pradesh.

"Against the demand of 10,000mw, the government is supplying only 5,000 to 6,000mw power in the state," he said.

Leader of the opposition Ahmad Hasan said the power situation in the state was grim and was a matter of grave concern.

"Villages and even big towns are sans electricity, but ensuring power supply is not on the government's priority. Its only priority is to erect stones," he said.

Replying on behalf of the government, energy minister Ramveer Upadhyaya said a target of augmenting 25,000mw power has been fixed.

"Work of power projects having generation capacity of 10,000mw has already been launched," he said, adding that some power projects will become operational by next year.

By 2014, people will get round-the-clock electricity and UP will become a power surplus state," he said.

However, dissatisfied with the government's reply, the SP members walked out of the House and the motion was rejected by chairman Ganesh Shanker Pandey.
