Questioning the BJP's "silence" on the Balwant Singh Rajoana issue, Congress on Wednesday accused the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of supporting the bandh called by different Sikh organisations in protest against his scheduled execution.

"Why is the BJP is silent (on the issue of Rajaona) they should clear their stand its a serious matter the government is backing the bandh call," leader of opposition Sunil Kumar Jakhar said in the state Assembly here during the zero hour.

He asked the BJP to clarify how long it will be a partner of SAD in Punjab. "A red alert has been sounded in the state yellow flags are forcefully fixed at top of houses of people where is the freedom of the people," he said.

Taking strong exception to the absence of leader of House and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, he questioned "with Badal not here who is the custodian of the House".

Congress will not remain silent on the issue of maintaining law and order in the state, he said.

He alleged that a SAD MLA NK Sharma had been seen clearly last evening helping protesters in the preparedness for the bandh call.

Jakhar's remarks resulted in animated arguments between treasury and opposition members.

Intervening in the matter, Information and Public Relations Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is brother-in-law of Sukhbir, asked the Congress not to inflate the issue as "all legislators are in favour of maintaining peace and communal harmony in the state".

Seeking to clarify allegations against SAD MLA Sharma, he said that the MLA was infact requesting the protesters yesterday evening to maintain law and order.

"Congress is trying to inflate the issue," he said adding that people of Punjab knew it who was responsible for vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
