Srinagar: Militants attacked the ancestral house of Rajouri braveheart Ruksana Kausar at Shahdara Sharief when they lobbed grenades and opened fire on her residence on Friday evening, in an apparent bid to avenge the killing of their commander one month ago.

However, no one was present in the house when the incident happened. The police party guarding the village retaliated, forcing the ultras to beat a hasty retreat.

Rukhsana, 21, had become a youth icon when she killed Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Abu Osama in a daredevil act on September 27. Later, she and her family were shifted from her village and settled in a safehouse in Rajouri, in a bid to keep the ultras at bay.

On Saturday she said youths should be imparted training in fighting terror. "These militants are very powerful...I feel young boys and girls should be imparted proper training so that they can drive militants away. The training will enable them to handle firearms if the need arises," shesaid. "Yesterday, they (the militants) tried to attack my house and burn it down."

SSP Rajouri Shafaqat Watali said the incident happened at around 9.30pm, when militants lobbed a grenade -- and then opened fire on -- Rukhsana's home.
