Mystery woman Veena, who disappeared after deposing in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, continues to baffle investigators.

Veena signed the inquest report on 14-year-old Ruchika’s alleged suicide posing as her mother and wife of Subhash Girhotra. She told police that the teen did not commit suicide, contrary to the post-mortem report, but died of an overdose of slimming pills she had been taking for long.

Her statement helped absolve the molester, former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore, of the charge of abetment to suicide.

Subhash Girhotra, however, said Veena was not his wife but a governess. He said he lost his wife way back in 1986.

“She [Veena] disappeared after I sold my house in Panchkula to escape the torture and harassment inflicted by Rathore,” Subhash said.

But Rathore’s lawyer insisted Veena was Ruchika’s stepmother and that Subhash had stated on oath before the Patiala district and sessions judge that she was his wife. He said even Ashu, Ruchika’s brother, had admitted during cross-examination that Veena was his stepmother.

Meanwhile, Pankaj Bhardwaj, counsel for Anand and Madhu Prakash, who have been fighting for justice to Ruchika, has demanded a fresh investigation into the role of Veena.
Bhardwaj claimed the inquest proceedings were doctored. He said police, acting at the instance of Rathore, were so desperate to doctor the inquest report that they did not even bother to register accurate names of the deceased and her father.

While Ruchika was shown as Ruby, the name of her father was mentioned as SC Khatri, Bhardwaj said.

“We will move the Supreme Court [SC] and press for addition of section 306 IPC (abetment to suicide) to the charges against Rathore. The chemical examination report following the post-mortem  clearly states that Ruchika died of consuming an insecticide.
The report was provided to the CBI but it chose to ignore it,” he said.

Claiming that the CBI worked under pressure and compromised investigation, Bhardwaj said the agency did not even bother to record Ashu’s statement.
