Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s sudden appearance in New Delhi to give the Sangh Parivar’s official reaction to the Ayodhya verdict surprised many.

But it was all part of a well-thought-out strategy to maintain communal peace and send a message to the people that the parivar was united on the issue.

The BJP, which hasn’t yet figured out whether the verdict will work to its advantage or not, left it to RSS to tell the nation that it was not mixing politics with religion.

Bhagwat was specially flown from Nagpur to convey a strong message to Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, the parivar’s rabble-rousers, that this was not the time to rouse sentiments.

In his appeal to the country, he said, “The decision should not be construed as victory or defeat. I appeal to the country, including Muslims, to overcome bitterness and work for nation building.”
A senior BJP leader said, “By fielding the RSS chief, we have succeeded in conveying a uniform message. Otherwise, it would have become difficult to control VHP, Bajrang Dal and BJP speaking in different tongues.”

BJP also reckoned that under the leadership of Nitin Gadkari it would become difficult to project a united front and issued clear directives to units across the country not to utter a word on Ayodhya before hearing Bhagwat’s message.

A core committee of top BJP leaders in Delhi and state units across the country held meetings after the directives from ideological mentor Bhagwat. Whether it was senior leader LK Advani, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi or Gopinath Munde, all displayed restraint on the issue.
