Rs5 lakh compensation for kin of the dead in Panki train mishap

Railway minister Mamata Banerjee today announced Rs5 lakh as compensation for the next of kin of those killed in the train mishap at Panki near Kanpur.

Passengers who have suffered serious injuries would get Rs1 lakh as compensation, while those with minor injuries would receive Rs10,000 each, officials said.

The Gorakhpur-bound Gorakhdham Express rammed into the Delhi-Allahabad Prayagraj Express at Panki, about 25 km from Kanpur, in dense fog this morning.

Banerjee also ordered an inquiry to be conducted by commissioner, Railway Safety, KK Bajpai into the accident.

Railway Board Member (Mechanical) Pravin Kumar, Member (Electrical) Sudesh Kumar and Director General Railway Health Services VK Ramteke have rushed to the accident site to oversee rescue efforts.
