The state government has announced a whopping increase of 69.38 per cent for the home department, increasing the fund allotment from Rs204.65 crore in 2008-09 to Rs346.65 crore for the current fiscal year. A major share of the budget, close to Rs96 crore, has been allocated for the police modernisation process, while setting up of state reserved police (SRP) groups in Kutch and Jamnagar stands second in line, for which Rs62 crore has been set aside.

DNA had earlier reported that the state police are gearing up to set up two new SRP groups in Kutch and Jamnagar for the security of industrial units in the state.
The state government had allocated Rs175 crore for the home department in the year 2008-09, which was later increased to 204.65 crore and to Rs346.65 crore for the current fiscal year.

Even last year, the maximum amount (Rs60 crore) was allocated for the police modernisation process under which new arms & ammunition and vehicles were purchased. A sizeable amount of the fund allocated for police modernisation will be used for purchasing technologically advanced weapons and vehicles and computerisation of police residences.

This apart, the sum allocated for Border Area Development has been raised from Rs24.20 crore in 2008-09 to Rs42 crore for the current fiscal. In addition, Rs7 crore has been set aside for setting up police stations and district offices in tribal areas, while Rs26 crore has been allotted for constructing quarters for SRP policemen and jawans.
Considering the increasing threats of bomb blasts in the state, the strength of the bomb disposal squad has been raised from five to 13. A total of Rs8.07 crore will be doled out for setting up the new bomb disposal squads in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Gandhinagar.

Besides this, the mismanagement in state jails owing to overcrowding will also be tackled efficiently since the government has allocated Rs24.94 crore for constructing new jails and modernising the existing ones. Last year, ambulances for Junagadh district jail, Chhota Udepur sub jail and Modasa and Gondal sub jails were also proposed.
In the budget proposed for the last fiscal year, seven new police stations were to be constructed. The figure this year has been increased to 13 with a budget allocation of Rs4.35 crore. However, while two new women police stations were proposed in Vadodara and Jamnagar last year, no such mention has been made this year. This apart, Rs40 crore have been allocated to strengthen various offices of senior cops and government offices.
