Twenty-four families whose houses were completely damaged during an encounter between militants and security forces at Chinkipora-Sopore last month were today given Rs1 lakh each for reconstruction.

Minister of State for Revenue and Rehabilitation Nasir Aslam Wani distributed cheques of Rs one lakh each among the affected families, an official release said here.

The government has taken prompt action to rehabilitate these families, as they suffered collateral damage during the encounter on February 23, he said.

Referring to various developmental projects for the beautification of Sopore, Wani said Rs25 crore have already been sanctioned to bring it on a par with other developed towns in the country. He said Rs 60 lakh would be given to 50 BPL families for construction of their dwelling units under various housing schemes.
