Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has proposed to give a facelift to the VS Hospital in the 2011-12 budget. To start with, AMC has decided to erect two multistoried towers on the hospital campus.

The buildings will be constructed at the place of the blood bank and staff quarters on the campus. While one building will be of 15 stories, the other will be of eight stories.

AMC has proposed to spend Rs180 crore on the whole project, from which Rs15 crore will be spent in the first year. According to mayor Asit Vora, the new buildings will have the latest equipment and a conference hall of international standards. 131 families living in the staff quarters have been asked to vacate the place so that construction can begin. "We have convinced them to give the space and are shifting them to Shahwadi area," said the mayor.

The civic body officials recently made a visit to the hospital to improve the quality of healthcare and talked to the doctors about the problems they were facing. During the visit, officials also served notices to 12 doctors of the gynaecology ward for being absent from duty. There are a total of 169 doctors serving in the hospital, which include 93 non-practising and 76 practising doctors.

The mayor also declared that from now onwards, vacant posts for doctors should only be filled with fulltime doctors.

Further, AMC has decided to allow internal transfers of doctors within 3 hospitals of the city. Thus, doctors will be transferred from one hospital to another, i.e. VS Hospital, Shardaben Municipal Hospital and LG Hospital.

Officials also made a surprise check of the 'drug schedule', and found that almost 40% medicines available in the hospital to be banned or of no use. "We have removed these medicines and ordered a new batch of medicines to be purchased for the needy patients, so that they don't have to buy it from outside," said the mayor.

The mayor has decided to decentralise the powers, including some of his own, to revive the overall management of the hospital. He has already constituted a 5-member executive committee to look after the operations of the hospital. The committee includes the mayor, superintendent of VS Hospital, a doctor from the hospital, board member of the hospital and the deputy municipal commissioner.
