Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will develop a 20-km long stretch of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in the eastern part of the city.

The proposal to award the Rs116.74 crore contract, at 12.71% higher rate than what was estimated, will be placed before the AMC's standing committee at its meeting on Thursday.

As per the tender price, the civic body will spend nearly Rs5.84 crore for development of BRTS corridor in the eastern part of Ahmedabad. This price does not include cost of building bus shelters, garden development, installation of high mast lights and other beautification elements.

The 20-km long stretch includes stretches from Shahalam to Odhav via ST and Soni Ni Chawl, from Kalupur Approach to Naroda Village via Amdupura, Memco, Naroda Patia and from Vivekanand approach to ST via Astodia.

The stretch is part of the first package of phase two of Janmarg Project.

The civic body has fixed 21 months time limit to complete the project, while defect liability period has been fixed at 60 months.
Although the tender is quoted at 12.74% higher rate compared to the cost estimated by the civic body, it is likely to get the nod from AMC's standing committee. The civic body had estimated a cost of Rs103.58 crore for this project. It has been repeatedly alleged that the ruling party is favouring the contractors by approving tenders with higher prices.

The civic body could bring down the rates by only 0.25% after negotiation with the lowest bidder. The lowest bidder had quoted 12.96% higher rate for the project, which was brought down to 12.71% but is still high compared to estimated price.

Other two bidders had quoted 14.31% and 19.80% higher rate compared to  the price estimated by the civic body. The civic body had awarded a contract of Rs129.21 crore for developing 18 km long stretch of BRTS corridor in the western part of Ahmedabad in January 2010.
