As Rahul and Priyanka make an all-out attempt to restore the fortunes of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the unabashed political ambitions of the businessman son-in-law Robert Vadra has the Gandhi family worried.
Even as Priyanka sought to play down her husband’s political intent, Vadra did not play along with this line and asserted that he was very much in line to play a political role. “We have nothing to add after her clarification,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi, but the lines of worry are quite unmistakable in the party as there is a feeling that the son-in-law should have shunned these observations.
“This is not the way someone associated with the Gandhi family should be making announcements about his political plans... To make such statements in the middle of a high-stakes campaign is surely uncalled for,” said a senior Congress functionary.
The other aspect that is strikingly different in Vadra’s statement from the traditional approach of the Gandhi family is the clamour for a position in politics. “Neither Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi have demonstrated any desire for position, and this is the fact that differentiates them from the rest,” the functionary added.
