The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) on Sunday played host to members and office-bearers of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) at the riverfront.

The idea was to keep the key trade body posted about the importance and progress of the ambitious project.

The chamber delegation  included its president Rupesh Shah, senior vice president Samir Patel, vice president Rakesh Shah, and executive committee members Vimal Ambani, Pradeep Chona, YD Sud, Ashish Guru, and Pinakin Dixit.

"A particular class in society believes that SRFDCL is a commercial project, which is not true," said municipal commissioner IP Gautam, briefing the delegation. He said that the company would be hardly able to raise the capital cost from the auction of the land for commercial development.

"The project is not real estate one as it is largely conceived. It is a social uplift, urban rejuvenation and environment cleanliness project," said Bimal Patel, architect of SRFDCL. He also said that chief minister Narendra Modi had asked the authority to broaden the scope of the riverfront to incorporate the areas around it in the development. "The CM's advice makes the project urban rejuvenation," he said.

The slum-dwellers on the river banks would be provided with new houses under a scheme for economically weaker sections (EWS), while the civic body's plan to clean the water will help reduce pollution by making it a project of environment cleanliness, said Patel. He also said that there will not be any private plot on the riverfront and every square foot of the land will be of public ownership.

The purpose of marketing the land for commercial use on the riverfront also motivated the civic body in arranging such a visit. "We want to provide proper and authentic information about the project," said Gautam.

Chamber members were delighted at the visit. "Such projects in the centre of the city are always welcome. It may result in reducing prices of real estate in the peripheral areas of the city," said Vimal Ambani, a leading businessman.  Some members also enjoyed boating in the river.

Rajya Sabha member Surendra Patel was also present.
