In an open letter to chief minister Narendra Modi, retired IPS officer and former DGP RB Sreekumar has condemned the state government's hostility towards officers who had refused to obey illegal orders during the riots of 2002. He has termed the Modi government's attitude as "sadbhavna towards sycophants and dushbhavana towards the honest and the upright."

"Looking at your government's performance since 2002, it appears that there is a conspicuous mismatch between the much-publicised objectives of your fast and the bitter truths about the ground situation," the letter says. It goes on to criticise the state government's action against IPS officers who had dared to reveal the truth about the alleged conspiracy behind the riots.

Sreekumar has named as many as seven IAS officers and 16 IPS officers in his letter who were rewarded with extension in service, good postings and lucrative assignments after retirement allegedly for subverting the criminal justice system during the riots and after.

"[On the other hand], police officers who contained the riots effectively in Rajkot city, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Valsad, Surendranagar, Bharuch and Kutch districts were meted out departmental harassment," Sreekumar has alleged.

At the end, he has asked the chief minister to make three announcements on the last day of his fast. First, drop proceedings against nine officers who had dared to speak the truth against the state government and are now facing harassment; secondly, prosecute officers who were involved in planning and execution of the riots and also those who did nothing to prevent the communal mayhem; and, thirdly, announce a genuine scheme of relief for the riot victims, Sreekumar says.
