Resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue very pragmatic: Nirupama Rao

India today said that the decision for resumption of Indo-Pak dialogue after two years was "very pragmatic", noting that keeping this process in "abeyance" for far too long has not given returns for either of the two countries.

Foreign secretary Nirupama Rao said that India and Pakistan must engage in a dialogue which is "serious, sustained and comprehensive."

"We have held it both sides in abeyance for far too long and I don't think it has created returns for either of us. I think this is a very pragmatic decision, a very well thought out decision," Rao told NDTV shortly after a statement was issued simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad on the decision to resume bilateral dialogue on "all issues".

Rao, who held talks with her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir in Thimphu on Sunday, said the reality is that India and Pakistan cannot afford to "turn their backs" to each other.

Replying to a question, Rao said India had always the political will and an intention to see the dialogue with Pakistan being taken "forward" because this is the "only option."

Rao also said that terrorism and counter-terrorism is of core concern for India.

Asked whether she was more optimistic on Indo-Pak talks today than six months back, Rao said she is "cautiously optimistic."
