Forward Markets Commission (FMC) is examining a study report on the percolation of benefits of commodity futures market among small and marginal farmers and increasing their participation in it, the government informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Food Minister KV Thomas said during Question Hour that the government has received the study conducted by the NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS).
The study recommends intensive awareness programmes, need for growers associations to act as aggregaters and brokers as small farmers would not be in a position to participate in futures market individually, requirement of institutional finance for meeting margin requirement and banking support to meet post-harvest credit requirement.
Evolving a cost effective, reliable and convenient warehousing system, setting up of quality testing centres, effective price dissemination, setting up of e-kiosks in villages and simplification of trade procedures are among key recommendations, the minister said, adding that the report is under examination of FMC.
